High Resolution Mobile Photography

If you enjoy mobile photography you’ll like this app comparison. I really like mobile photography and believe it is the future. Of course, I still want high quality images even when using my mobile phone camera. This is where the Hydra app comes in to … well the picture.

Hydra is a photo app available in the App Store that, in part, allows you to take high resolution (up-to 32MB) photos with your iPhone. Here are some samples comparing the native Camera app with the “HI-RES” option in Hydra. I am using an iPhone 7+ running iOS 12.1. Be sure to click on the photos to open in full size. This will allow you to see the nuanced differences in quality. Pay attention to the small lettering and pixelation.

Conclusion

You can see from the images above that the Hydra app, using the HI-RES option, adds a lot of nice detail. The images are also larger, higher quality. For example, the last image with the native Camera app is 4032 x 3024 (2.8MB) whereas the version with Hydra is 6528 x 4896 (4.2MB). Also, when you zoom in you can clearly see a greater level of detail from the Hydra app when compared to the native Camera app.

The Hydra app costs $4.99 (no in-app purchases). I hope you enjoy taking hi-res photos with Hydra!

NOTE: This review was made using the first version of the Hydra app. Latest as of May 2023 is version 2.
